Thanks to my recent collaborations and bento tool purchases, it’s no secret that Target is my happy place. And for the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to brainstorm a good Earth Day post with food art. So when I came across some organic green tea (my fave) at the bulls-eyed retailer, my creative juices started flowing. Or should I say brewing? Read on to see what I mean.
Note: True tea aficionados know that the “coffee aisle” really means the “tea aisle”.
I was a Bigelow Tea fan for quite some time before getting into loose-leaf. I’m pleasantly surprised that they carry organic green tea, and kicking myself for not noticing earlier. There it’s been, all along in the coffee and tea aisle, just waiting for me to snatch it up. I picked up the box along with a box of Earl Grey, which reminds me of my awkward trying-to-act-grown-up high school days.
Bigelow and Sustainability
Funny how you can be a brand consumer and not even know their story; perhaps it’s a bit of built-in skepticism we have of big brands. But after reading up on Bigelow and its “SustainabiliTea” program, I’m impressed by their earth-conscious efforts. Just a few laudable stats: Bigelow’s three facilities send ZERO percent of their waste to landfills, and they’ve preserved 347 acres of land to protect from real estate development. The company also enforces composting and recycling programs and has solar panels at their headquarters–generating enough energy to power a whopping 568 homes a year.
Bigelow’s green ways inspired me to whip up some art using their tea; I simply steeped a teabag in a shallow sauce bowl with a couple ounces of hot water to get the most concentrated color possible.
Another nice discovery: Bigelow Facebook page doesn’t just tout products and sales, but also ways they commit to making a difference behind the scenes–be it by way of an employee community garden or their involvement with the Ethical Tea Partnership to support sustainable and ethical practices, including gender equality. (Bigelow’s founder was a woman!)
Plus, the boxes, teabags, and strings are all 100% biodegradable and compostable. Earth-friendly indeed.
In honor of Mother’s Day, Bigelow is sponsoring a “Thank You Mom” giveaway on its Facebook page through April 30. Multiple prizes include SpaFinder gift cards, Bigelow Tea assortments, and Walmart gift cards. Enter, then browse the Twitter account for impossibly adorable photos of kiddie tea parties.
A trip to Target, a warm cup of tea, and
food beverage art: an Earth Day well spent.
What would you paint with Bigelow Tea?
